History
Our University was established by Law No. 3837, which came into force upon its publication in the Official Gazette (No. 21281) on July 11, 1992. Following an agreement between the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the Ministry of Health, it began its academic journey on September 10, 1992, as the School of Health, offering associate degree programs. With the Decree of the Council of Ministers No. 96/685 on November 2, 1996, it transitioned to undergraduate education under the name Balıkesir School of Health.Following an amendment to the Nursing Law on April 25, 2007, the Department of Health Officership was closed, and its curriculum was integrated into the Department of Nursing.
Later, with the Decree of the Council of Ministers No. 2018/11959, published in the Official Gazette (No. 30451) on June 14, 2018, the Balıkesir School of Health was closed, and the Balıkesir University Faculty of Health Sciences (SBF) was established in its place.
In addition to the Departments of Nursing, Midwifery, and Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation that continue their educational activities within our faculty, we also have the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, approved for opening by the Council of Higher Education on February 3, 2012 (decree no. 5765), and the Department of Gerontology, approved on January 27, 2021. While the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics has not yet begun student admissions, the Department of Gerontology is scheduled to commence its educational activities in the 2026-2027 academic year.
